Portugal Clubs Ranked - 1960/61 to 2024/25

Portugese football fans have to be realistic. Unless they support one of a few teams, there will be slim pickings. SL Benfica and FC Porto rule with Sporting CP not too far back.

The chart to the right shows points for domestic (Por) and including European success in the Tot column. There isn't too much of the latter as is explained further down the page. 

As for how points are collected first domestic points. In the Liga Portugal (Division 1) the top four are rewarded with 6, 3, 2 and 1. The Taça da Portugal (Cup) 4 and 2 points for the finalists only. The Taça da Liga (League Cup) 3 & 1. 

The Primeira Liga or Liga Portugal (Division 1) is about three clubs. Only once since 1960/61 has another club won it, Boavista FC in 2000/01. That was also the only year Benfica hasn't been in the top four. FC Porto has missed out twice in that time. Sporting has made the top four all but five times. The winner of the last two Ligas has been Sporting CP with Benfica second on each occasion. 

The Taça da Portugal or the equivalent to the FA Cup is not so monopolised as the Liga Portugal. Knock out football never is. 

Porto lifted the trophy for the three years, previous to the latest. Braga, Porto and CD Aves once each in previous editions back to 2017/18. Sporting in 2018/19 and in 2024/25 soi is the current holder.

The Taça da Liga (League Cup) was introduced in the 2007/08 season so has been contested just 17 times. Benfica won seven of the first nine held but none since until 2024/25 when it added another title. 

Europe hasn't been too kind to Portugese sides of late. Their top players are now more likely to move elsewhere. Benfica won the European Cup twice in 1961 and 1962 but not since. Porto also in 1987 while Sporting secured the Cup Winner's Cup in 1964. None of those dates are recent, a reality of modern sport where money is so influential.

All put together, the clubs are below. The grand total is shown for each club, divided into regions with a ranking number (Rk) which gives their place compared to all the other clubs. Lisbon leads (56.6%) from the North (40.8%) and the rest (Central & South minimal)

Greece: Clubs Ranked - 1960/61 to 2024/25

A few clubs dominate football in Greece. The chart on the right shows that. The 'Gre' column is for domestic games and 'Tot' adds European glory. Four clubs are well represented and that's about it. Virtually all points are from the domestic competition with European success rare. 

So how do the points work? In the Super League (Division 1) the top four are rewarded with 6, 3, 2 and 1. The Greek Cup 4 and 2 points for the finalists only. The League Cup was held once but still scored 3 and 1 for the finalists.

In Europe, the Champions League (European Cup) 8, 4 and two from the semi finals forward. The Europa League (UEFA Cup) got 6, 3 and 1. The new Conference League I added to the long defunct Cup Winner's Cup. They get 4 and 2 for the finalists. 

From 1997/98 to 2021/22, Olympiacos won the league 22 out of 26 times. Panathinaikos and PAOK have since won it once each in that order. AEK Athens last won in 2017/18. In the time covered here, only five clubs have won the league. The outlier was Alpha Ethniki-AEL in 1987/88. The 2024/25 title went to Olympiacos.

The Cup is not well spread among clubs either. The four listed to the right dominate. Over the last 26 years, only the four listed have won it. Recent winners are PAOK, Panathinaikos twice and AEK Athens once with Olympiacos the current holders of the cup. 

Europe is a tough ask but Olympiacos won the Conference League in 2024, the only title a Greek side has won over this period. Panathinaikos has had some Champions League success but no titles. 

All put together, the clubs are below. The grand total is shown for each club, divided into regions with a ranking number (Rk) which gives their place compared to all the other clubs. Athens with 79.0% of the success, Thessaloniki (16.8%) and the Rest (4.2%). It reflects the dominance of a few clubs. Feedback welcome.

Spain: Clubs Ranked - 1960/61 to 2024/25

Two clubs dominate the football landscape of the country. To the right we have a chart that shows in the far column points allocated for domestic football (Spa) and then including European success (Tot).

Real Madrid is only just ahead of Barcelona at home but the gap widens when Europe is added. Both clubs have done well in Europe but Real Madrid especially so.

So how do the points work? In La Liga (Division 1) the top four are rewarded with 6, 3, 2 and 1. The Copa Del Rey (Cup) 4 and 2 points for the finalists only. The Copa de la Liga (League Cup) was a brief affair but still scored 3 and 1 for the finalists.

In Europe, the Champions League (European Cup) 8, 4 and two from the semi finals forward. The Europa League (UEFA Cup) got 6, 3 and 1. The new Conference League I added to the long defunct Cup Winner's Cup. They get 4 and 2 for the finalists. 

For La Liga the top is Real Madrid with Barcelona the only one close. Atlético Madrid does well in the shadow of RM but the rest are well off. 

The last time a club had consecutive league wins was Barcelona in 2017/18 and 2018/19. RM in 2019/20, 2021/22 and 2023/24, Atlético Madrid won in 2020/21, Barca 2020/21, 2022/23 and are the current champions.

The main cup competition is led by Barcelona. They took the trophy home four consecutive times from the 2013/14 season but then the 2020/21 and 2024/25 victories are the only two after that.

Recently Valencia, Real Sociadad, Real Betis, Real Madrid Atlético Bilbao have each had a turn at winning the cup. 

There is much success in Europe for clubs from Spain, with the usual suspect at the top of the list. RM has won the Champions League ten times going back to 1960/6, most in recent times. Barcelona last won in 2015. Sevilla hasn't been very successful in Spain but has in Europe with the Europa League. It has won that competition five times since 2014. The 2024/25 season was not one to remember for Spanish clubs.

Madrid is the most successful region with 41.7% of all points. The East which includes Barcelona is closely behind with 39.6%. The other regions are the Basque, South, North West and two islands (Balearic and Canary).
